7 items to get rid of before your interstate move

7 items to get rid of before your interstate move
February 23, 2021

Too preoccupied with moving to know if you’re sparking joy or not? We get you. When you’re preparing for an interstate move, you’re on an emotional roller coaster. How can you tell if your belongings spark joy when your mood barometer reads ‘anxious?’

At Colonial Van Lines, we want you to declutter responsibly. That’s why, instead of asking you to identify joy at this utterly nerve-wracking time, we’re going to list a few items that you should declutter before your interstate move. We hope it helps.

7 Items to Get Rid of Before an Interstate Move

Get your garbage bags ready and your mind set to ruthless. Here are some things that are not going to get through the door of your new residence.

1.) Clothes That You Don’t Wear Anymore

To paraphrase Oprah, if you haven’t worn it in two years, you might want to think about never wearing it again. Those socks without partners, jeans that don’t zip, clothes that the characters from the TV show “Friends” might have rocked in 1994? Let it go! And if you have a coat or hat to spare, there are a lot of people who will make good use of it in the chilly weather.

2.) Miscellaneous Items

According to the Cambridge dictionary, “A miscellaneous group is made up of an odd bunch of things you wouldn’t expect to go together.” Such as a broken rubber band, a sewing kit from the 99 Cent Store, and a small piece of cereal that has well outlived its expiration date? You’re certainly not going to miss these things items when they’re gone; so, designate them to the trash pile.

3.) Health and Beauty

You know that cheap bath set that you got from your coworker last Christmas? Its regifting days are over. Toss it, along with the balding eye shadow palette, the corroded mascara, and the mini perfume that came in the party favor bag from your nephew’s bar mitzvah.

4.) Stale Food

When food rots, it stinks to the high heavens. When food goes stale, it can do so quite innocuously. And just as the squeaky wheel gets the grease,  the smelly food gets the boot. The stale food, on the other hand, can sit for years collecting dust in your pantry. Set a timer for 15 minutes and go through your freezer, cabinets, and fridge. If it’s expired or opened and abandoned, dump it. If you’re not going to eat it, give it to someone who will.

5.) Extra dishes

If you’ve got a set of dishes that you love, you’ll spark joy every time you use it. If you’ve got a set of dishes hidden away at the bottom of your china closet, it’s only going to spark joy when your relatives come to visit. Pick a set and stick to it. Give the second set to someone who will make regular use of it.

6.) Kid’s Stuff

Perhaps the only thing harder than parting with your stuff is getting your kids to part with their stuff. Consider making it a game for them, such as “Whoever Collects Ten Things for Donation Gets Dinner at BJs.” There is no sacrifice a child won’t make for a Pazookie.

7.) Stuff that Depresses You

Save the sentimental stuff for last, but if something makes you mad, sad, or neurotic, let it go. Leave behind the unpleasant memories and make room for happier ones.
