Moving to Florida

With a distinctive shape, Florida boasts over 1,300 miles of coastline, more than half of which is made up by oceanfront beaches. As the southernmost state in the nation, the balmy year-round climate makes the Sunshine State an ideal vacation destination, which drives its sizeable tourism industry.

Tourists and newcomers love to sample the local flavor when they visit a new city, and there’s no shortage of that in Florida. Residents are as diverse in age as they are in culture. Some of the country’s largest retirement communities are found in Florida, where transplants from all over the country flock to take advantage of the resort lifestyle and tropical climate.

The biggest melting pot in the Southeastern United States, Florida has become a hub for many cultures, making sampling the various neighborhoods throughout their cities feel like an international tour.

Top Cities in Florida

Out of the 50 states in the nation, Florida is ranked 23rd in area. However, this smallish state is the 4th most populous in the nation. With its total population quickly approaching 20 million, it is one little state that packs a big punch.

The state’s capital and seventh most populous city, Tallahassee, is located above the state’s Southern coastal plain. Tallahassee features a flourishing park system thanks to its proximity to Apalachicola National Forest.

Jacksonville

Named after the seventh U.S. president, Andrew Jackson, Jacksonville is Florida’s most populous city. Located just south of Georgia along Florida’s northeast coastal plain, the Jacksonville metro area is home to over 1.6 million people, making it the most populous city in the entire southeastern U.S. Home to a rich musical culture, Jacksonville is the spot credited with the first official Blues performance ever in 1910. It is also the place where southern rock was born, home to both Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers.

Miami

One of the most culturally iconic cities in the nation, it is hard to picture Miami without a distinctive flavor springing to mind. A major port city on the south Atlantic coast of Florida and home to over 443,000 residents as well as the Miami Dolphins, this colorful city is the second-most populous in the state. Miami’s metro area is the fourth-largest urban area in the U.S., with a population of around 5.5 million. Famous for its Art Deco architecture with its fanciful shapes accented by bright pastels, the aesthetic is nothing if not whimsical. Miami Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations in the country, featuring unparalleled nightlife and culture. This city’s Cuban influence can be felt in the cuisine of the street food as well as its music scene and robust art district.

Tampa

With a population of 368,087, Tampa comes in as Florida’s third-largest city. Located on the west coast of Florida, Tampa Bay faces the Gulf of Mexico. A major business hub in the southeast region of the country, Tampa offers an abundance of museums and culture. Tampa is home to the famous safari adventures at Busch Gardens, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the historic Ybor City neighborhood, a top dining and nightlife destination.

Orlando

One of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, tourism makes up a sizeable portion of Orlando’s industry. From Disney World to Universal Orlando, Sea World, and many other parks and attractions, this hub of family fun has earned its title as the theme park capital of the world. This industry attracts workers from all over the planet, making Orlando one of the most globally diverse cities in the nation.

Florida Statistics

Adopted into statehood in 1845, Florida was the 27th state to join the Union.

Home to more than 150 colleges and universities, Florida provides excellent opportunities for higher learning while playing in the sand. The top universities in the state include the University of Florida at Gainesville, the University of Miami at Coral Gables, and Florida State University at Tallahassee.

Touting three professional football teams, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Miami Dolphins, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Florida is also the home of the Orange Bowl. This fan-crazed state also houses two pro baseball teams: the Florida Marlins and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, along with two pro basketball teams: the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic. Avid golfers will appreciate the PGA national resort as well as a multitude of exclusive golf courses.

Things to Do in Florida

For a state that occupies just over 65,000 square miles of land, Florida is jam-packed with popular destinations and entertainment.

If you’re looking for theme parks, two giants tower above the rest. Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando offer all-inclusive resorts featuring various theme and water parks as well as retail and entertainment meccas. Other kid-friendly entertainment includes Sea World, Busch Gardens, and Legoland, in addition to many zoos and aquariums throughout the state.

As for arts, culture, and educational gems, Florida offers a long list of museums, theaters, and galleries to dazzle your senses. The Dali Museum of Surrealism in St. Petersburg and the Perez Modern Art Museum feature world-class installations. Live music and theater enthusiasts will enjoy The Miami City Ballet as well as the historic Florida Theatre. Blues fans can pay their respects at House of Blues Orlando or catch one of the longest-running festivals in the country, the Blues Festival at Jacksonville Beach.

Who could forget the famous beaches and rich cuisine? There are many places to soak up the sun and play in the waves, but the top beaches include Key West, Palm Beach, Cocoa Beach, and Miami Beach. The distinctive cuisines of Florida are as varied and rich as its culture. Southern soul food, BBQ, and Creole influences from the northeastern part of the state mingle with the Caribbean, Latino, and European flavors of southeast Florida to create something truly special. From roadside BBQ stands, fish shacks, and taco trucks to five-star, seven-course feasts, eating your way through Florida is nothing if not an adventure.
