Moving to New Hampshire

It can be exciting to make the move to the east coast. Here beautiful weather, cold winters, and lots of outdoor activities await. Most residents and those moving to town depend on the Everett Turnpike to get around the state and in some cases, around in the cities. It’s important to do a little bit of research before committing to New Hampshire. For example, new residents are often stumped by the sheer number of stores that are closed on Mondays. This is especially true for smaller businesses and located owned businesses. It may not be ideal to make Monday the day for catching up on errands.

Another thing to keep in mind is the tax situation in New Hampshire. There is no income tax and there is no sales tax. At first glance, this might seem like a miracle. But it’s important to remember that revenue must be made up somehow. In this state, it comes in the form of property taxes. So, when shopping for a new home after making the long distance move, be sure to consider how much that is going to affect a house payment.

Top Cities in New Hampshire

Manchester

The sheer number of college students in Manchester gives the community a young vibe. These students come from places like Southern New Hampshire University and the University of New Hampshire at Manchester. While it is much smaller than most states’ largest cities (its population is only about 400,000) it’s still a bustle metro area that gets lots of attention when election time rolls around. Many residents live in Manchester and then choose to make the 53-mile commute to Boston for work.

The weather is both a good and bad feature of the city. Expect to see about 60 inches of snowfall during an average winter. But, at the same time, be sure to check out all of the winter activities, including sledding and skiing that take place nearby. According to US News and World Report, Manchester ranks 37th when it comes to the best places to live.

Nashua

With a little over 88,000 residents, Nashua is considerably smaller than nearby Manchester. However, twice (1987 and 1997) Money magazine determined that Nashua was the Best Place to Live in America. It’s easy to see why this would be the case. While the cost of real estate can be a little high, the city is tucked away in a perfect location. It balances out the demands of the big city, with a quaint, small-town feel. With countless walking areas and trails, this is a great place to put on some tennis shoes and explore the area. Also, there are lots of different job opportunities available with big employers like UPS and Fidelity having branches in the city.

Concord

Concord, the capital of New Hampshire, has a population of just over 42,000 residents, with the median age being about 40 years old. The unemployment rate is considerably low as is the rate of violent crimes and property crimes. These are just a few of the reasons why this is such a desirable place to call home. Located on the Merrimack River, the city offers easy travel for those that are commuting to larger cities nearby. The lack of income tax, as well as the lack of sales tax, makes the cost of living in Concord fairly low. Expansion Management magazine suggested that the public education provided in Concord is the best in the state.

New Hampshire Statistics

Around 1.3 million people call New Hampshire home and on average, the state has an average of 147 people per square mile. The state isn’t large, but it packs a punch, especially when election time rolls around. This swing state tends to get a lot of attention because it doesn’t historically side with one political party or the other. This means that lots of campaigns make their way to New Hampshire to try to sway residents one way or the other.

While there are no professional teams to speak of in New Hampshire, NASCAR fans will be sure to visit the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the only stop the sport makes within New England. There are two minor league teams that call this state home. The Fisher Cats feed into the Toronto Blue Jays MLB team. The Manchester Monarchs feed into the LA Kings hockey team.

Things to Do in New Hampshire

Mount Washington is a great place for residents looking to enjoy the outdoors to stop. One of the best ways to get to the top is to take the Mount Washington Cog Railway, complete with breathtaking views the entire way. Other popular outdoor destinations include Lake Winnipesaukee with its beautiful beaches and water that freezes over in the wintertime, and Franconia Notch State Park, located in Grafton County.

Market Square in Portsmouth is another great place to visit as it is the starting point for a large number of walking tours of the area. There are plenty of places to shop and lots of history to uncover along the way. For those interested in history, there are lots of museums in the area. The Wright Museum of World War II is located in Wolfeboro and the USS Albacore Museum offers a close up look at a submarine. Those with families won’t want to miss Santa’s Village. Located in Jefferson, the theme park opens up in May. There are great places to eat, several different rides, and when Christmas time rolls around, there are countless activities for kids to participate in including an Elf scavenger hunt and Santa’s Express Train.

But most residents will admit that one of the most exciting and interesting things to do in New Hampshire is following political campaigns. The state is notorious for playing a big role in national politics. It isn’t surprising for presidential candidates to make at least a stop or two in the state. Residents tend to be well informed and take the time to investigate all sides of a candidate and the issues before coming to an informed decision.
