The beautiful state of Washington is home to a number of large cities, each of which offers unique take-aways for both residents and tourists. Home to more than seven million people, the state is thriving.
Seattle is the largest city in the state, with a population of 704,352. Home to one of the nation’s most widely recognized attractions, the Space Needle, Seattle is also where Starbucks and Boeing were founded.
Spokane has a population of 215,973 people, making it the second-largest city in Washington. Well-known for its amazing fall foliage, Spokane was home to the World’s Fair in 1974, at which time it was the smallest city in size to host the event. On average, it boasts 174 days per year of sunny weather.
Tacoma comes in third on the population scale, with 211,277 people. Tacoma is home to the Tacoma Dome, which is the largest wood-domed arena in the world. The city offers spectacular views of Mt. Rainier, and the surrounding park offers a variety of outdoor activities for any enthusiast.

The state of Washington is the only state in the nation to be named after a United States President.
There are five active volcanoes in the Cascade Mountain Range. Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, Mount Saint Helens, Mount Baker, and Glacier Peak are all located in the state. This means that one quarter of the active volcanoes in the 48 contiguous states are located in Washington.
Seattle is home to both the Mariners and the Seahawks, which are both popular professional teams. If you don’t have to be out and about around game time, the locals recommend staying in, as traffic becomes very heavy as people work to get to the live event.
Washington produces more apples than any other state in the nation, with the red delicious apple being the most prolific. The apple became a state symbol in 1989.
Washington is home to a number of highly ranked elementary and high schools, with a total of 88 schools throughout the state receiving rankings from the US News Best Schools.

Things to do in Washington
Washington is home to a variety of entertainments, including national parks, festivals, and sporting events.
The Victorian Heritage Festival is held in Port Townsend each year, offering an opportunity to enjoy some Victorian-era fun, including bare-knuckle boxing, Gatling gun demonstrations, a fashion show, and the Victorian Ball. Held in late March, this festival is reminiscence at its finest.
Olympia is home to the Dragon Boat Festival, an event where teams race against one another in dragon-like boats. This event attracts over 5,000 visitors each year, and provides a look at traditional Chinese arts, including music and martial arts.
Hoopfest, held in late June, is the biggest 3-on-3 street basketball tournament in the world. More than 250,000 visitors come to Spokane for this event each year, covering 42 downtown city blocks.
The Issaquah Salmon Days Festival, found in Seattle in early October each year, brings in more than 180,000 people each year. Designed to celebrate the return of salmon, there is a wealth of free entertainment available for the duration of the festival.
Washington is home to many beautiful national parks, including Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, and North Cascades National Park. Featuring everything from a marine sanctuary to a volcano to glaciers and lakes, there is an outdoor activity to be found no matter what you’re looking for.
