How to Meet Your Neighbors

Moving across the country can be daunting. With everything on your to-do list, meeting your neighbors and getting acquainted with your new environment might not seem a priority. There are many elements to plan for and be aware of, including when to start packing, figuring out what to keep and what to get rid of, handling all the particulars of your subscriptions, mailing address, etc.

However, getting to know those around you is something you should consider doing sooner rather than later. Take a look at some suggestions for figuring out how to meet your neighbors and get better acquainted with your new neighborhood once you’ve moved.

First Observe

Meeting your new neighbors doesn’t have to be difficult or tricky. Start by taking some time when you initially move to your new home to observe and watch. Take note of who seems to have kids and who doesn’t. Watch for those who like to spend time in their gardens or any elderly neighbors out on walks. The more you observe, the more likely you will find things you have in common with people in the area.

Spend Time Outside

A natural way to introduce yourself to your new neighbors is to spend time outside. If you’re both outdoors, you’ll naturally have the opportunity to say hello and chat for a while. This can be a simple way to strike up conversations and become more familiar with one another.

Introduce Yourself with a Friendly Gift

Another great way to meet your new neighbors is to introduce yourself with a gift. If you want to take the direct approach to meet the people living around you, walk up to their front door, knock, and hand them a small gift, and introduce yourself. This is where the observing step can come in handy. You might have discovered that the person would love flowers and appreciate fresh blooms.

Get Involved

Go to community events and get involved in what’s going on in your neighborhood. You’ll find that you’ll naturally get to know your neighbors better. Things like neighborhood barbeques, 4th of July parties, birthday celebrations, and other get-togethers are great ways to get to know people and have fun together.

Plan a Housewarming Party

Open your doors to your neighbors and invite everyone in for a housewarming at your new place, and you’ll get to know them pretty quickly. Inviting your neighbors into your home lets, you set the scene for learning more about them.

Have a Dinner Party

Get a little more intimate with a dinner party and invite one or two groups of neighbors over at a time. A dinner party is a more intimate setting than a regular house party—you’ll be able to ask them all the get-to-know-you questions and really get a feel for who they are.

Ask for Advice

When you go to their homes to introduce yourself or invite them over, ask them for their advice on the best schools, places to get groceries, nearby parks, the best gyms, and whatever comes to mind. This will invite them to have an open, comfortable conversation where you clearly value what they’re saying. It makes people feel good when their opinion and thoughts are valued.
