Move Here and Save: The Lowest Cost of Living States

Move Here and Save: The Lowest Cost of Living States
May 19, 2019

Do you dream in kitchens with marble countertops, islands, and undermount sinks? Do you find yourself drooling over home improvement reality shows? Are you trying to figure out the logistics of getting a jacuzzi into your one-room apartment? If urban or suburban sprawl is on your bucket list, now’s the time to take them off. The sooner you move to a low cost of living state, the sooner you can start living your dream.

What does it mean to live in a low cost of living state? Simply put, it means lower home mortgages and rents, lower gas prices, competitive jobs, and a lot of ridiculously cheap “all you can eat buffets.” For many of us, it also means relocation. Is the cost of moving cross country worth the low cost of living? If you find the right moving company it is. Some long-distance moving company knows the importance of sticking with a budget.

What are the Lowest Cost of Living States?

Although there are quite a few low-cost of living states, not all of them are going to float your boat. You want to find a state with the right balance of nature, art, and attractions that can allow you to have fun while enjoying your financial freedom.

Just think of how far your money can go when you choose to live in a state with a low cost of living. There will be so much extra to pay off debt or student loans, you may be able to save and start your own business, or travel the country, maybe even the world. Did we mention you can probably get a newer home with nice appliances in a great neighborhood for much cheaper?

Here are the best states with the lowest cost of income. If it makes sense in your life to save and move here, consider these states for a relocation.

Mississippi

Mississippi may be hard to spell but it does boast the lowest cost out of living of all 50 states. With the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment at $795 per month, its easy to see why people want to live an affordable life in Mississippi. What a great place to live with passionate college football and some of the best barbeque in the region. Mississippi is also known for being Above Average when it comes to religion, so if you are looking to connect spiritually, Mississippi can be a great match for you.

Tennessee

Home of Elvis, Johnny Cash, ribs and the blues, Tennessee ranks highest of the lowest cost of living states. You’ll enjoy four seasons of gorgeous weather, bordered by the splendor of the mighty Mississippi on the west and the Great Smoky Mountains in the east. And if you prefer the country music scene to the outdoor scenery, you can head over to Nashville for some of the best country music venues this side of the Mississippi. Check out the town of Murfreeboro located just south of Nashville to get the most bang for your buck.

Oklahoma

When the Oklahoma territories were opened up to settlers in 1889, thousands stood on the border waiting for the signal to race in and stake their claims. With today’s median income of $26,083 and a median house price of $264,200, you may want to stake your claim there as well. Don’t let the agricultural image put you off, there’s a lot more to Oklahoma than farms. The Oklahoma Arts Council provides grants for creative ventures and advocates for the state’s artistic community.

Arkansas

What better way to live in a natural state than to live in “The Natural State?” With 51 parks, well-preserved forests and majestic Ozark Mountains, Arkansas has more than earned the moniker. Now it can add low-cost of living state to its resume. The Arkansas median salary of $60,214 and median house price is $184,000 makes for a nice balance of work, play, and a little Southern hospitality.

Texas

Everything’s big in Texas, except for its cost of living. With a median home price of $197,300 and a median income of 60,000, Texas is hotter than ever. Its cities took five of the top spots on the list of youngest towns, reflecting the growing number of families and college students flocking to the area. San Antonio’s downtown Riverwalk area is fast becoming the new hipster hotspot with its bars and restaurants, while Austin is focused on “Keeping Austin Weird.” If you choose to settle in this affordable city, be prepared to nonconform accordingly.

Utah

Utah – home of what makes America “America the Beautiful.” It’s the home of the national parks: Zion, Capitol Reef, and Arches, to name a few, as well as the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Even with all the opportunities for play in Utah, there may be just as many employment opportunities. The Daily Beast ranked Utah the number one place for starting over because of its low cost of living and high rate of employment. With a median income of $68,356 and median home sale prices at 235,000, even the world’s largest city (Salt Lake) ha one of the lowest costs of living.
