Top Cities in New York

New York City

It’s hard to think about New York the state without considering New York City. It is, hands down, the largest metro area within the United States. While the cost of living does tend to be higher here, more and more people continue to flock to the city to make new lives for themselves. The city is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Each one brings something unique to city life, giving residents the opportunity to experience a wide range of historical landmarks, cultural cuisine and customs, and multitudes of entertainment. Be prepared to try and keep up with this fast-paced city!

Buffalo seems to be making a comeback of sorts as of late. Today, the area near the water is developing and bringing with it lots of opportunity for residents. At the same time, this area of the country is experiencing major breakthroughs when it comes to medicine, attracting more and more people. While still a big city, Buffalo tends to demonstrate a slower pace than its neighbor to the south. It’s proximity to Niagara Falls is another attractive feature. However, most people love the fact that this big city still has a bit of a hometown feel.

Rochester is the ideal blending of a rich past and a bright future. Older buildings that have been around for a century stand tall next to newer structures that are being updated or completely redone. It also offers a nice balance when it comes to city life and the surrounding suburbs. There are lots of locations to choose from, allowing residents to choose their ideal living arrangement. Unlike other big cities, running into friendly people in the area is a common occurrence.

With a name like Yonkers, it’s tough not to be curious about the city. Residents boast that the area ranks high when it comes to quality of life. It’s possible to live in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city, or just outside in one of the many residential areas. Historical sites are sprinkled throughout the city, and many people find themselves drawn to the waterfront esplanade on the weekends to take in the view or enjoy a nice walk. The area is home to over 70 parks and claims to be the fourth safest city of its size in the United States.

New York Statistics

As of July of 2018, New York is home to around 19.5 million people. Around 40 percent of these residents live in New York City. And when it comes to sports, people take their loyalty seriously. The state is home to the Yankees (MLB), Mets (MLB) the Knicks (NBA), the Rangers (NHL), the Islanders (NHL), and the Jets (NFL). That means that during any given season, New Yorkers have the ability to check out a game somewhere.

In the past, statistics suggested that New York wasn’t that safe of a place to live. This was especially true for New York City. But today, thanks to improving techniques and programs by local police departments and changes to local laws, residents consider themselves safe within the state line.

When it comes to education, New York City is home to the largest school district in America with over one million students. According to US News and World Report, New York ranks 23 out of 50 states when it comes to education. There are public and private options for students, from preschool all the way to college.

Things to Do in New York

There is absolutely no shortage of things to do in New York. If the weather is good and the streets aren’t too crowded, a walk to a local park or even to a local restaurant can be a rewarding experience. But there are some big attractions that call the state home, and new residents are definitely going to want to check them all out.

The Empire State Building, located in New York City, offers a beautiful view from the top. Plan for a visit day or night, as both options provide a breathtaking experience. While in the city, most people also make a stop at the 9/11 Memorial Museum and the One World Observatory to get a new perspective on the city.

But New York City isn’t the only place where residents can find great things to do. Niagara Falls draws a big crowd every year as people flock in from around the globe to discover the natural wonders of North America. Three different waterfalls can be found in the area, with most people opting to board the Maid of the Mist boat tour to get the best views. The Finger Lakes are another outdoor activity new residents are often surprised to stumble upon. During the summer the lakes are packed as residents and visitors head out onto the water.

Moving to New York

There are a wide range of reasons to leave everything else behind and take a chance with long distance moving to New York. There’s plenty to do, plenty to see, and opportunity awaits around every corner. Because this big city is often a big transition for individuals and families, it’s important to spend some time researching where the new residence will be, how parking will work, and how local transportation works. Depending on where a person lives, a vehicle may not be all that necessary.

Another important thing to consider is how much is actually going to be moved to New York. An apartment or loft may not have the same amount of room as a larger home. It makes sense to take a closer look at all of the possessions and decide which ones are most important when it comes to making the move to New York State. This might be a good time to clear out some of the non-essentials and streamline possessions to ensure that only important things are making their way to your new life.

Absolutely Top Notch!!!
The moving guys (2 of them) showed up during a blizzard! Now THAT is service for sure! We had to turn the house over that day and were unexpectedly hit with a blizzard in NY and we were moving to NC. But the guys showed up and did a phenomenal job! They were quick, efficient, polite, and took great care with all of the furniture and boxes. The delivery was also just as great! I highly recommend Colonial Van Lines. It was a great experience and we will certainly call on them again next time we need to move (whether out of state or within a state). I can’t thank them enough for making this move go so smoothly. – Giovanni U.

I was doing online research and I called Colonial Van Lines for quotes. I liked the gentleman and the realistic nature of the conversation with him. The move was from Indiana to New York State, so it was a long thing. I didn’t have any particular requests but as downsizing seniors, we needed packing and they got the full packing done. The young men who packed us up and delivered were great. Overall, Colonial did everything they could to make the move easy for us. – Eileen
