Moving To North Carolina

Making North Carolina your new home means plenty of options for everyone in the family. A state known for mountains, great universities and a popular hub for exploring the Appalachian mountains, North Carolina is a great place for travel and to reside. Moving to North Carolina means access to ten popular commercial airports for easy air travel to the rest of the United States as well as internationally from the busiest of these, the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.

Getting around by plane is great for long distances, but what about just exploring within the state itself? Most residents of North Carolina find it best to have a car, if not only for day-to-day necessities, but also to get to explore all that this great state has to offer. Exploring the United States via the Coastal Highway, or U.S. Highway 17, is one way to get to see many great sights in North Carolina. Driving through New Bern and stopping for some slow-cooked North Carolina barbecue is a great way to spend an afternoon. Be sure to also stop along in Washington, North Carolina which has one of the largest estuaries in North America.

Top Cities in North Carolina

North Carolina has a healthy population of 10.3 million people, with enough space to fit everyone comfortably without any city feeling too overcrowded. The biggest city in the state is Charlotte, with approximately 890,000 of the state’s residents living in the city and even more living right outside the city. Charlotte is known for being a modern city that is growing fast. The airport in Charlotte is the perfect location between the North and South for many visitors and is also a popular stopover for many airlines.

The second largest city in North Carolina by population is Raleigh with 485,000 residents. As the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh is known for its many top universities in the area, all contributing to popular scholarly topics in technology and research. Interestingly, for being a metropolitan capital city, Raleigh is actually called the “City of Oaks” due to the abundance of oak trees which can be seen all over. With plenty of museums, entertainment centers, and art galleries, there is something for everyone in the capital.

In the top five most populated cities of North Carolina, Greensboro should be mentioned. History buffs can enjoy interactive exhibitions and reenactments of American history at the different museums. Nature lovers can see red pandas, sharks and more at the science center. A city with history, museums and even a wetlands area to explore means plenty of things to learn and interact with while living in this beautiful state.

Honorable mention for one of the smaller top cities in North Carolina goes to Asheville, which is small but mighty. Asheville is a hub for culture, art, and nature. Located in the blue ridge mountains and with a popular section of the Pisgah National Forest, Asheville is a great place to explore the great outdoors. From hiking to climbing to bird watching, there is never a dull moment in this mountainous part of the state. The art district in downtown Asheville is a popular spot for day trips from all over the state, and the area of Asheville itself brings hikers, art lovers and those looking for a like-minded community of eco-friendly residents to live alongside.

North Carolina Statistics

North Carolina has many different great cities to live in, but did you know that almost half of the population lives in what can be considered rural counties? It’s true, many single-family homes are located away from the bright lights of the big city, with families preferring to live closer to nature with more land for their families to play and grow. North Carolina statistics show that over two-thirds of the population own the homes they live in, as it is a great place to settle down and call home. With plenty of things to take pride in such as great collegiate and national sports teams, beautiful scenery everywhere you look and friendly neighbors, it’s no wonder it’s a great place for families.

Things to Do in North Carolina

The Carolinas have plenty of activities and events for adventure seekers, art lovers, history buffs or those interested in family fun. The first thing that comes to many people’s minds when they think of North Carolina is the scenery. Mountains and ocean alike are popular destinations for families and vacationers, and both can be found in abundance in this state.

The Appalachian Trail has a stretch in North Carolina for 95 miles, with even more along the border with Tennessee. This is a popular place for day hikers, though some people enjoy thru-hiking where they continue through North Carolina and up through other states while camping along the trail.

If hiking isn’t your cup of tea, a day at the beach is always an option. Nag’s Head and the Outerbanks area, in general, is a great place to unwind and take a break from your hectic daily life. The beaches are beautiful, there is a fishing pier if you are into that, and the dunes and greenery of Jockey’s Ridge State Park are great to explore for the whole family.

The Biltmore Estate is another item on the best things to do in North Carolina. This grand estate is the largest private home in the U.S. and it is open for visitors to check out some of the interior and exterior. Built by George Vanderbilt, the location in the blue ridge mountains near Asheville makes this a day activity to remember. The views alone of this grand home as you approach it will stick with you for years to come.

Last but certainly not least, there are even more amazing views to be seen at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Drive along the scenic blue ridge parkway to get the best unrestricted views of this awe-inspiring land. The misty mountains, a plethora of trees and interesting wildlife are all sure to bring a smile to your face.

We used Colonial Van Lines to recently move from Virginia to North Carolina. Granted, it wasn’t a long distance move, but the two guys took the time to pack, wrap, and secure our items, nonetheless. In addition, we were pleased that Colonial met all expectations. From start to finish, the Colonial staff who we worked with, Tomas, Joseph, Daniel, and Luis made this dreaded move easier. The two movers who were assigned to our move were efficient and professional. We recommend Colonial to anyone looking to move! – Charlene M.

This company moved me from North Carolina to Minnesota. My move was handled professionally and arrived 1 week ahead of the due date. During the pre move I had all of my questions answered quickly. This move was particularly hard for me, I had CoVid and my ability to pack was delayed. I used many small boxes as well as moving boxes with no problems being accepted by the moving team. My bigger and more fragile items were packed by the movers and all arrived safely. I recommend their service and I would definitely use them again. – Donna J.

Colonial Van Lines just moved me from Alexandria Virginia to Winston-Salem North Carolina. They were professional, careful, and prompt. Nothing was broken, damaged or lost. The price was about $1000. less expensive than the other moving companies I called. I recommend them highly and would use their services if “god forbid”, I ever have to more again. – Lillian F.
