Moving to Maryland

Often called “Little America,” Maryland is a perfect sampling of everything that the United States has to offer. From the world renowned crab cakes and seafood to the historical depth of the area, there is truly something for everyone here. Before the move, it might be a good idea to try some Old Bay on some favorite dishes. And, when checking out the different places to live, it’s important to understand that the selected county often becomes part of a resident’s identity. Don’t be surprised when a person’s first question is, “What county are you from?”

Like other states in the northeast, as the seasons change, the temperatures follow suit. This means that it gets pretty cold in the winter, with snow being something that many people look forward to. And in the summer, residents are thankful for all of the nearby water. So when it comes time to move, take these weather conditions into consideration. Things tend to be nice in both the spring and the fall.

Long distance moving to Maryland can be quite an undertaking. There’s a lot to learn about the new area and a lot of adjustments that need to be made. It helps to have professionals available to take care of the heavy lifting, making it easier to start the process of adapting to Maryland’s way of life.

Top Cities in Maryland

Baltimore

It’s true that Baltimore doesn’t have as many attractions as its neighbor, Washington DC. And it may not hold as much historical significance as another nearby city – Philadelphia. But that’s what adds to the charm of Baltimore. It’s just far enough away from these cities to still enjoy the feel of a smaller town, making it an ideal location for commuters to these cities to live.

It’s hard to be in Baltimore without enjoying the city’s famous crab cakes, but there’s more to the city than just the seafood. Its palate is continuing to expand with new restaurants and an infusion of unique cuisine due in part to the historical districts like Little Italy and Greektown. At the same time, the nightlife is also expanding, offering even more for the younger crowds to enjoy.

Columbia

In 2016, Money magazine named Columbia the best place to live. There were several reasons the city headed the list, including its diverse population and the close proximity to both Baltimore and DC. Starting out as a planned community, the city continues to attract commuters that may need to work in a bigger city but still want their own space. In fact, it’s actually designed to encourage community with homes, apartments, and townhomes all found within each of the ten villages within the city.

It’s important to realize that with all of the benefits of a master planned community, there are some additional things to keep in mind. There are some fees that residents pay in order to live in the area, including an annual fee to the Columbia Association that maintains many of the town’s amenities. There are also costs per month for access to the local pools and recreation centers. However, the quality of these places usually makes the cost well worth it.

Germantown

Only a little over thirty miles from DC and 50 miles from Baltimore, Germantown is ideal for families. This community is divided into six smaller villages and is a great location for those that need to commute to DC for work. The largest public school system in the state is located in Germantown and boasts of several awards for both quality and overall achievement. From performing arts venues to the Great Seneca Stream Valley Park, perfect for fitness enthusiasts, Germantown has it all.

Maryland Statistics

Maryland is home to just over six million residents. In the past, the state suffered from higher crime rates. But studies have shown a decrease over the past decade in both violent and property crimes, suggesting that cities are taking new steps to keep their residents safe.

When it comes to education, according to US News and World Report, the state of Maryland ranks 12th in higher education and 13th in Pre-K to 12th grade. Loyola University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland and St. John’s College all call this state home.

Americans tend to love their sports and Maryland residents are fiercely devoted to their local sports teams. The Washington Redskins football team plays their games at FedEx Field while the Baltimore Ravens play at the M & T Bank Stadium. The Baltimore Orioles baseball team can be found at their park in Camden Yards. Nine of the colleges in the state participate in Division I sports.

Things to Do in Maryland

After making the move to Maryland, it will take a considerable amount of time to take in all that the state has to offer. There’s plenty to see and do throughout the area, ensuring countless weekends of fun and exploration for everyone. Consider starting at the Ocean City Boardwalk. This is a great place to check out the beach and get a feel for the food and culture that you can expect to find throughout the state.

It’s no secret that residents and visitors love to spend time on the water. The Northside Park in Ocean City, the National Harborfront Area, and Lake Kittamaquandi are all great places to take in the scenery and experience water activities. There’s a big focus on sailing in Maryland, so don’t forget to check out the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum as well as some of the historic ships located in Baltimore.

There are several theme parks to enjoy while spending time in Maryland. Six Flags America tends to be a popular destination because of its daring rides and the overall experience that it provides guests. The Jolly Roger Amusement Park offers roller coaster rides as well as a water park section with slides, twists and turns. Even after all of this has been experienced, there are still countless historic sites to discover and museums to explore, and every resident must make his or her way to Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
