15 Questions To Ask Your Movers When Getting Moving Estimates
March 25, 2019

Whether you’re moving a few blocks away or across the country, you want to ensure that a moving company will safely and respectfully transport your belongings at an affordable price. To make sure you find the right team for your move, we’ve created a list of questions to ask moving companies before hiring any of them.

  1. What’s Your Registration Number?
This is one of the most important questions to ask moving companies. This number shows that a company is registered with the US Department of Transportation and with the Federal Motor Carriers Association.
  2. Do You Provide Packing and Storage Services?
If packing services are provided, ask how your belongings will be stored and labeled. Also, ask if they provide storage services should you need them.
  3. Do You Have Insurance and What Does it Cover?
Before you choose a moving company, ask if they have insurance and if they’re responsible for any damage. You should be able to insure your items based on value rather than weight.
  4. What is Your Cost Estimate and How is it Determined?
This question is on every list of questions to ask moving companies. Avoid companies that charge you based on cubic feet rather than weight or distance. Be sure to get an estimate in writing that includes all costs and is signed by both parties.
  5. How Long Have You Been in Business?
While newer companies can still do a great job, you’ll want to look for companies that have stayed in business for a long time. This shows they’re experienced and reliable.
  6. Do You Have References?
References are like customer reviews for a moving company. This information from an unbiased source will give you a general idea of the type of quality of service you can expect.
  7. Will I Be Charged Additional Fees?
Be aware of any additional fees a company can charge you upfront. Ask if there’s a fee for extra weight, longer distances, or fuel.
  8. Do You Have Experience with My Type of Move?
Ensure your team is prepared to handle the unique circumstances of your move, including no elevator, multiple stories, parking restrictions, or small doorways.
  9. Will There Be Additional Transfers?
For long-distance moves, it’s not uncommon to transfer your belongings to another truck on the way. Ensure you know about transfers beforehand.
  10. What Deposits are Required?
Every company will charge a different deposit amount. Typically, you can expect to pay around 25%, and you should avoid companies that charge more.
  11. What is Your Cancellation Policy?
Should you need to cancel or change your reservation, be sure you know their cancellation policy beforehand.
  12. How Long Will My Move Take?
Find out how long you can expect your move to take, what happens if your belongings arrive before you do, and if additional travel time is needed.
  13. How Will You Handle My Items?
Ask your team of movers how they plan on transferring your belongings and how they plan to protect your things during your move.
  14. Do You Provide an Inventory List?
An inventory list is a way for you to document your belongings down to the very last spoon.
  15. Do You Have Questions for Me?
You’ll know a moving company is good if they answer “yes” to this question. A good mover will ask questions about the contents of your home or for more information about your move.
